Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Types of events that can lead to PTSD include:

  • serious accidents.
  • physical or sexual assault.
  • abuse, including childhood or domestic abuse.
  • exposure to traumatic events at work, including remote exposure.
  • serious health problems, such as being admitted to intensive care.
  • childbirth experiences, such as losing a baby.

Common symptoms of PTSD

  1. vivid flashbacks (feeling like the trauma is happening right now)
  2. intrusive thoughts or images.
  3. nightmares.
  4. intense distress at real or symbolic reminders of the trauma.
  5. physical sensations such as pain, sweating, nausea or trembling.

There are 3 main types of psychological therapies used to treat people with PTSD.

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy that aims to help you manage problems by changing how you think and act. 
  • Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) 
  • Support and advice.
